Q. How do I keep my
stones from falling off the DOP stick?
A. Try heating the stone a little and you
will find they stick much better.
Q. My stone is heat
sensitive, (opal) how do I keep from over heating when I DOP it?
A. Another little
"trick of the trade". Heat
the DOP wax on your DOP stick until
it is very soft, not so hot as to be runny. Put the DOP wax to your stone. Wait
a few seconds and pull the DOP stick and DOP wax off your stone. Repeat this
process until the DOP wax bends or stretches but does not come off your stone.
This usually takes about 3 on and off steps. Finally quickly rotate the stone in
the flame, this seals the edge and prevents water from getting under the stone
and weakening the bond. What happens is that you have heated your stone just
enough to adhere well to your DOP stick, but you have not overheated the stone.
We use this method on opal, and have very good success.
